Welcome to the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Our mission is to maintain the highest possible level of productivity and excellence in research, education and service.
Our researchers use integrative approaches to study cardiovascular, renal, neuroendocrine and metabolic systems in health and in diseases. The department enjoys strong extramural research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Heart Association (AHA) and other professional organizations.
The department trains undergraduate, medical, dental and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows. The PhD program emphasizes research that integrates physiology with genetics, molecular and cellular biology. Watch the video about the Physiology and Biophysics graduate program.
Our faculty and graduates have served as leaders in the AHA and the Council on Hypertension, the NIH, the American Physiological Society, the International Society of Hypertension and the Inter-American Society of Hypertension.
The department has a long, proud history of achievements, especially in development of academic leaders and in cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases research. We invite you to learn more about us through our News and Kudos page as well as our newsletter and publications.
